Both my girls are a little under the weather with runny noses and coughs. With the dark rain clouds covering our town it makes me not want to leave the house. Since we have some big adventures coming up I decided to keep Mason home from school today. We ended up having so much fun staying in pj's and doing some projects. Here is some of the fun we had today.
I found this great recipe for easy Snow Playdough on the blog "
Funny Days with Mommy and Maddie". I LOVE this blog - she always has such fun ideas to do with the kids! This is the best recipe I've found out there:
2 cups water
2 TBSP vegetable oil
1 cup salt
4 tsp. cream of tartar
2 cups flour
vanilla extract* (we used peppermint)
glitter**
Combine all ingredients in large pan on stove. Over medium heat, stir until most of the lumps disappear and it thickens up to a dough-like consistency. Dump out the dough onto your counter top and knead the dough until nice a smooth. It looked pretty with the glitter and it smelled even better! The whole house was filled with peppermint!

The girls sat at the table and played with this for close to an hour! SWEET!
After using every playdough tool in our box they moved on to making snowmen. I got out some random art supplies and they used their imagination to make interesting snowpeople. After this picture, Mason also made a snowbaby and snowdog!
Addi insisted on holding her snowman's hand in this picture. I thought it was so cute! She was VERY proud of her creation!
Once the playdough was put away the girls wanted MORE projects! So I got out some craft sticks and we made some ornaments. We made some trees and reindeer.

We spent the rest of the day playing with the early Christmas presents, making tents and snuggling in front of the window watching the rain pour down! Overall it was a great day. I am so glad that I was able to slow down enough to enjoy the day at home with my girls. I may not have gotten to check things off my list (note to self: next year I will remember that it is OK to buy some presents instead of wanting to make them all!) but I still felt successful!
Here are some projects we have done during the month of December:
* Handprint Christmas trees with cousins

* Fruit Loop trees with Addi and Elizabeth. Elizabeth was much more interested in eating the Fruit Loops - it was so funny!
Mason wanted to help so she turned on her "teacher talk" and tried to get Elizabeth to put the cereal on the tree NOT in her mouth. After this picture Mason gave up and let Eli eat them while she finished the project. :)
* Santa face I found on Kidsoup. It was supposed to be an advent calendar but we just used it as a project. Mason loved this one!
* Decorated foam Christmas trees that stand up with a cup.
* Handprint and footprint Rudolph. Addi LOVED this one! She liked painting her hands and foot and she laughed and shouted "RUDOLPH!" when she glued the eyes and nose on and finally realized what she made!
* Rudolph snacks (graham crackers, frosting, pretzel antlers, craisin eyes, jellybean noses). This was a fun snack we made one day. I saw this idea on my friend Emily's blog. Thanks for the great idea, Emily! It was a hit at our house!
We have been having fun at our house! I have also been doing my own little "projects" trying to get ready for Christmas. I'll post soon about some of the homemade gifts we are making this year. Speaking of homemade gifts - what am I doing on the computer?? I need to get to work!
